Father’s Day Lasting Memories
Father’s Day is an important day for many of us. A chance to pay homage to, and celebrate, the father figures and paternal bonds in our lives. This could be our fathers, grandfathers, or even anyone from whom we receive this important paternal influence.
I, for one, will surely be planted on the sofa this Father Day, watching the football with my dad, and cheering on his home nation of Wales in the Euro 2020 competition. I might even treat him to a nice bottle of beer, or a new necktie. I imagine many people will be spending this Sunday in a similar fashion.
Though, while many of us will be spending this Sunday with our fathers, it is also a time to remember, reflect, and celebrate those fathers no longer with us and a time to cherish those memories. The positive influence that father figures have on our lives can last a lifetime, and even be the basis of our own outlook on the world or the things we want to pass down to our children.
In the latter half of the 2010s, both of my grandfathers passed away, one of whom was living with dementia at the time. However, I still hold the memories of the times I spent with both of them very close, and their influence remains prominent. I will remember the values they imparted, as well as the practical lessons, such as how to grow your own vegetables!
With Father’s Day coming up, we have been focusing on memories with father figures. However, at Dementia Support, we know how much all memories matter, and the importance of taking the time to reflect and cherish them. Whether they be special memories of your father, mother, grandparent, spouse, partner, best friend… the list is endless!
Therefore, this week, we are launching our new Lasting Memory Tribute scheme. This is a personal, online, tribute fund and memorial page for any loved one who has passed.
One person who has found benefit in an online tribute fund is Dementia Support’s CEO, Sally Tabbner. Sally will be visiting her father’s tribute page this Father’s Day to reflect on her positive memories. She told me,
‘Its so nice to have a special place just for him, with pictures and videos of him, his favourite music, and lovely messages all in one place.'
